Built by the Brunels using their revolutionary tunnelling shield, the Thames Tunnel was the first in the world to connect two sides of a navigable river.

Connecting the London districts of Rotherhithe and Wapping, the golden age of the tunnel was as a pedestrian crossing and tourist attraction.

In 1869 the Thames Tunnel carried its first train service, and it now forms part of the London Overground network's Windrush line.

This painting brings together into a single scene key events in the Thames Tunnel's more than 190 years of history, including workers in the tunnelling shield, well-dressed visitors descending the original staircases, Brunel in silhouette holding his plans, and a modern electric London Overground train.
